When climbers first began to use rope as an aid to ascending the more technical peaks, the recognised means of belaying your partner was to take a turn of rope around your waist. The friction provided helped to slow a rapid descent, but over time ruined many a jacket, and caused painful friction burns to the hands.
No need for that these days with reasonably priced belay devices that will make the job much easier and safer. The Black Diamond ATC is a popular device, but we have many more available from most major climbing equipment suppliers.
