In 1818 the
Grivel family of blacksmith's transformed their production of agricultural tools. The
ice axe was born. 1909 saw an English engineer ask Henry
Grivel to manufacture the first modern
crampons. In 1936 a really strong crampon was created weighing just 360 grams a pair. These crampons have been used to conquer the 3 highest peaks in the world, including Everest.
Years later in 2003,
Grivel resolved the problem of
crampon snow build up by producing the first
anti-balling plate. 2006 saw the introduction of the ultra lightweight
Matrix Ice Axes with reduced weight and easy handling.
Grivel now offer a wide variety of
crampons including the
Cramp-O-Matic which is suitable for fitting to fully rigid leather and plastic boots with a binding lip.
