A true variable-friction device, the ATC-XP from Black Diamond maintains the silky-smooth feeding of the ATC but ups the braking power. For belaying and rappelling with 7.7-11 millimeter ropes, it’s designed with a smooth low friction side and a high friction side with v-shaped grooves for three times more friction. An extended central web keeps biners and ropes properly oriented and reduces kinking.

When using smaller rope diameters or climbing with a icy rope, simply reverse the ATC-XP and use in high friction mode.

  'SIMPLE, RELIABLE AND SURPRISINGLY VERSATILE'
Strengths: Worthy upgrade to the classic ATC, two friction modes are genuinely useful, simple to use
Weaknesses: a little heavier than similar devices
Overall: Now my regular belay device. It wouldn't be if it wasn't practical, manageable, reasonably light and robust at the same time.
