Exped Down Air Mattress
Air Mat 9 DLX - £125.00 inc. VAT
The latest development in sleeping comfort.

A down filled air mattress that offers incredible comfort and is 3 times warmer than any other mat of similar weight.

Tests conducted by Exped and EMPA, the Swiss government's material test and research laboratory showed that heat loss to the ground is typically 3 x greater than to the air. However, 700 Cubic Inches down fill insulation reduced this heat loss by 65%. The conclusion: Money is better spent on a mat that reduces heat loss than on a warmer sleeping bag.

A combination pump and stuff sack is included for storing and inflating the mat. Pumping air rather than blowing it prevents humidity from reaching the down, which could clump or freeze. Foam has also been added to the pump sack to assist the inflation process.

  • Laminated polyester fabric is textured for slip proof comfort.
  • Baffled construction to eliminate cold spots and prevent down shift.
  • High frequency welded seams.

  'AS GOOD AS IT GETS!'
Strengths: Fabulously comfortable. Not much heavier than a Thermarest and you can use a lighter sleeping bag. Easy to pack.
Weaknesses: A bit of a hassle to inflate. Too heavy for gramme counters. Not the cheapest option but very good value for what it does.
Overall: This is a truly remarkable bit of kit. I was never able to sleep through the night when wild camping due to waking up at 2am with an aching hip, neck or back and cold to boot. With the Exped, I always sleep straight through, even on my side and I'm now using a lighter sleeping bag than before. It is a bit of a faff to inflate. You have to use the stuffsack as an inflator to avoid getting the down damp and it is always a struggle to detach the inflator from the valve. It is easy to roll up and pack. The stuffsack can be rolled down and the excess air squeezed out to give you a firm, compact bundle that is easily stowed in your rucksack. I have owned both the Exped 9 and the 7. The 9 was actually a bit too thick and I didn't feel quite stable on it. The 7 is ideal, a bit lighter and just as comfy. This mattress really does get as close to the comfort of your own bed as it's possible when wild camping. There aren't many bits of kit that I take both car camping and backpacking (normally there is a heavier, more comfortable substitute) but this mat is one of them. Some users have commented on noise when moving on the mattress but I've not noticed it and I stay put on the Exped whereas I always used to wake up half off a Thermarest. As Pee Wiglet says, this can transform your wild camping experience.
