'
BEST PETZL ALL-ROUNDER
'
Strengths:
Light (only 78g) Versatile Comfortable Easy to operate Adjustable beam
Weaknesses:
A bit tricky to replace the batteries
Overall:
I've owned a few Petzls over the years, mainly the more powerful ones like the Myo. Lately, I've come to realise that these are over-engineered for what I need. I don't need a beam that can illuminate a Lancaster bomber at 10,000 feet; just something that lets me see in the dark. The Tikka Plus is the best all-rounder. It's light (half the weight of a Myo XP) and so comfortable to wear that you don't know you've got it on. The beam is certainly strong enough for night walking; I've used it to slog up the Talybont hills and pitch camp. There are 3 light settings so you can choose the lowest for reading in the tent plus a flashing mode for emergencies. The battery compartment is very compact and it can be a bit fiddly to change the 3 AAAs but you get so many hours of light that you won't have to do this very often. It's now my first choice for Summer backpacking.
